In Her Honor

I grew up in a household learning how important it was to vote, that it was our civic duty. Especially having a mother that was a naturalized citizen from Mexico. She would not ever miss an opportunity to vote. Shamefully, the first and last time I voted was in 2008 for personal reasons. So last week I made the bold decision and dropped off my voter’s registration in the mail. Forward to today, officially registered to cast my ballot! It made me somewhat emotional seeing my registration status as active. Mainly, because this is what my mom would have wanted. She was quite involved with keeping up on the current events of the political world. Every evening she would have Rachel Maddow on. Anytime you spoke during her program, she would tell you “shhh”. I chuckle thinking about it sometimes. Even though a huge part of me is doing this for her, there is a small part of me doing this for myself. Deep down I know voting this year is the right thing to do.
